This 1923 Bungalow was full of existing arts and crafts details, however the existing golden oak kitchen felt architecturally out of place. The existing kitchen layout had awkward circulation, lacked storage and countertop area — it didn’t function well for cooking or hanging out. The goals of this project were to create a kitchen that felt like it was part of the original home in character and could function as both a gourmet kitchen and gathering place for family and friends.

A 6′ x 15′ addition provided enough floor area to improve the flow through the space, fit in gourmet appliances and provide a generous rear entry landing space. The long island provides ample counter space, as well as a place for family to gather while keeping out from under foot of the chef. Many details make this kitchen highly function but also beautiful and clutter free for when guests come over. Full height upper cabinets on the sink wall hide away countertop appliances. A shallow full height cabinet on the end of the oven stack provides pantry storage. Open shelves on the island allow easy access and an attractive way to display larger kitchen equipment, but don’t take up valuable counter space. Base cabinets with drawers help make every inch of storage highly accessible and usable.

The final result was more than we could have dreamed of. From our initial contact with Katy until the day Larry turned over the keys, the process was clear, and even when we encountered surprises in renovating a 120-year-old home, we were communicated with quickly and clearly. Our “new” home is beautiful and much safer than it was, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.
